After-school program in Spokane Valley, Washington

Afternoons spent moving

A licensed after-school program in an indoor sports hall, for children ages 5 to 12. Snack and a homework hour come first, then the floor opens for relays, jump rope and team games.

  • Ages 5 to 12
  • School days until 6:15 p.m.
  • Summer weeks in the same hall

The week

Every weekday has its own game

Snack and a homework hour are part of every afternoon. What the floor holds changes with the day, so a child knows Monday means relays and Thursday means a team sport.

The hall

Room to run, and tables for homework

The program runs in an indoor sports hall. The floor stays open for games, the tables stand along one wall for snack and homework hour, and a staff member walks between them. On dry days part of the afternoon goes outside.

  • Indoor sneakers only, so the floor stays dry

  • Balls, ropes and mats counted and put away after each game

  • Games that mix the grades, with staff in every group

Safety routines

  • Sign-in and pickup

Each child is signed in at the front table. At pickup the child leaves only with an adult on your list, and we ask for photo ID from anyone we haven't met.

  • Allergies and medicine

Tell us about allergies on the tour; we ask for the details privately once you register. Medicine is given only with your written permission, by a staff member trained to give it.

  • Headcounts and the floor

We count heads whenever the group moves between the floor, the homework tables and the door. Balls and ropes are put away after each game, and the floor is checked before children play.

  • When a child is ill

A child with a fever or a contagious illness stays home. If a child feels ill here, we call the first person on your list and a staff member stays close until you arrive.

  • Drills

We walk through fire drills and a shelter drill with the children, and the exits stay clear of equipment.

  • Heat, smoke and weather

On dry days part of the afternoon goes outside. When it is wet, very hot, very cold or smoky, the whole afternoon stays in the hall, and summer water breaks come at set times.

Questions

What families ask us

Which children can come?

Children ages 5 to 12, from kindergarten through about grade 6. Tell us on the contact form which afternoons you are asking about.

What does a weekday look like?

Snack first, then a homework hour and a game on the floor, then the pickup window with free play. Each weekday has its own game.

How does my child get here from school?

When you register, tell us how your child arrives: with an adult, with a sibling or with a person on your list. We confirm the plan with you before the first day and keep it at the front table.

How do I hold a place, and is there a waitlist?

A place is held once you register and pay the first month. When we are full, we keep a waitlist in the order families asked and call the next family when a place opens.

Is there homework help?

A staff member walks between the tables during homework hour, answers questions and makes sure each child has started. We don't promise finished homework, so you will still look it over at night.

Do your staff speak Russian or Ukrainian?

Yes. Ruslan and Oksana speak Russian and Ukrainian, and they are glad to talk with your family in either language.

Come and see the hall

Visit on a school afternoon, when the floor is in use, or call first and ask anything. Ruslan or Oksana will answer.
